A holistic science practiced for over 5,000 years carries a body of knowledge for understanding human body within the laws of nature. On the physical level, Ayurveda teaches us that digestive system is one of the most important long-term determinants of our health. 'Healthy digestion means healthy life.' Healthy digestion simply means that all the nutrients we consume by taking food are assimilated into the cells properly.
The three major balancing pillars of Ayurveda are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Nature of these three elements define how a body will behave, hence proper balance of these is important for a healthy body.
If our digestion is proper, our body gets the ability to produce healthy tissues (dhatus). If the digestion is weak, the connective tissues of our body: blood, muscle and nerve may not function properly & thus, become susceptible to diseases. The cause of digestive diseases is directly proportional to our actions. By indulging in unhealthy eating habits, the functioning of our bodily doshas becomes unbalanced. Vata becomes upset by dry, cold and light foods such as raw vegetables. Pitta is upset by oily and warm foods such as deep fried vegetables while Kapha is upset by moist, heavy and cold foods such as yogurt and ice cream. Additionally, eating foods improperly is even more harmful than choosing unhealthy foods. Healthy food taken in a wrong way can also lead to digestive ailments.
